The Avon Maitland DSB uses STEPs tools as a basis for our Elementary and Secondary ESL and ELD programs. AMDSB uses a Supported Immersion Model for program delivery: i.e. Elementary ELLs are fully immersed in the mainstream program at their age appropriate grade level and are supported through classroom based program adaptations which include CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning,) ESL/ELD Intervention Tutoring, Accommodations, and Modifications to their programming and assessment. Secondary ELLs take an ESL or ELD credit each year; they also are integrated into regular courses where they work for credits. STEPs is the tool used in the Province of Ontario to determine students' level of English Language Acquisition - Steps to English Proficiency - of ELLs. It is similar to the Common European Framework, but based on research done in Ontario in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.
