STEPs is a new tool for teachers created by the Ontario Ministry of Education in Partnership with the Ontario Institute for studies in Education. STEPs provdes a consistent way for all teachers to assess ELLs and track their progress towards Academic English Language Fluency in Ontario Schools. The Avon Maitland DSB uses STEPs tools as a basis for our Elementary and Secondary ESL and ELD programs. AMDSB uses a Supported Immersion Model for program delivery: i.e. Elementary ELLs are fully immersed in the mainstream program at their age appropriate grade level and are supported through classroom based program adaptations which include CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning,) ESL/ELD Intervention Tutoring, Accomodations, and Modifications to their programming and assessment. Secondary ELLs take an ESL or ELD credit each year; they also are integrated into regular courses where they work for credits. STEPs is still a work in progress - many boards are now piloting STEPS. Be sure to watch the Ministry of Education's EDUGAINS website for STEPS developments over the next few years.
