Secondary STEPs Initial Assessment
AMDSB ELLs are immersed immediately into grade appropriate courses. Principals grant credits for senior students that reflect their prior schooling. Efforts are made to ensure that students can begin in their first year in courses that match their interests and goals, but require less English language skills: Phys Ed, Art, Music, Drama, Sciences and Maths, and locally developed courses.... Wherever possible students are given an ESL credit options instead of ENG until they are able to cope with the demands of literature studies in English; in our system this means AO, BO, and CO credits. We also provide opportunities for student to work for half credits in regular courses during their first two years. We let parents know that students will need more time to graduate and that we will monitor their student's progress closely to ensure they can achieve their goals.
ORAL - I use an interview for the oral components, similar to the old ERGO diagnostic. To pinpoint vocabulary range I recommend the work of University of Calgary Researchers Complete Lexical Tutor website which provides both online and printable tests of Academic Language.
READING AND WRITING - we have developed our own online test for reading and writing using research based tools.
